What an incredible treat it was to be in the presence of wonderful music delivered with flair and panache here in Chiang Mai. The Silpakorn String orchestra \u2013 all students barring one cello teacher \u2013 gave a near-capacity audience at Chiang Mai University a thrilling performance of works by Vivaldi, Holst and Leroy Anderson. The students were inspired and led by Tasana Nagavajara, the fine violinist and international celebrity who was the soloist and director in a wonderful performance of Vivaldi\u2019s iconic masterpiece \u201cThe Four Seasons\u201d. Tasana adores this piece of music and never gets tired of playing it and his tremendous energy and enthusiasm communicated itself to the young performers who gave as near a professional performance as could be expected from students whose average age is around 21 years old. In the very centre of the players sat the imperturbable Kittikhun Sodprasert on cello giving great central support to the players. Both the adults are teachers at the university and held in great respect by their students \u2013 and little wonder given the quality of the playing. All the nuances, delicate melodies and shimmering qualities of the Vivaldi were eloquently captured by Tasana, and the orchestra of 20 or so performers threw themselves into the music with vigour and energy. In the second half of the concert the exciting \u201cSt. Paul\u2019s Suite\u201d by Gustav Holst was equally inspiring \u2013 Tasana conducted the group who gave the audience an exhilarating rendition of this classic which incorporates many well known English folk songs. What was amazing in both the Vivaldi and the Holst was the way in which the orchestra managed to cope with the frequent and many changes in rhythm so effectively, demonstrating the old adage that practice makes perfect. With the delightfully amusing Leroy Anderson compositions \u201cThe Typewriter\u201d (complete with typewriter soloist!) and \u201cPlink, Plank Plunk\u201d the concert ended on a splendid note.<\/p>\n

In 1770 Franz Joseph Haydn wrote a piece of music for four hands on one piano entitled \u201cIl Maestro e Lo Scolare\u201d (The Master and the Student). Little did he imagine how much of a repercussion that would have on the world of music with this performance of \u201cDue Maestri e Gli Scolari\u201d (Two Masters and Their Students), if Haydn could permit such an analogy some 245 years later! This was great music making and an inspiration to all those young people struggling to perfect their own instruments \u2013 practice does indeed make perfect but with inspiration from two excellent teachers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
